Studying robotics engineering: requirements and profile

Digitalisation and the advance of technology have led to the emergence of new degrees and careers, and a clear example of this is the desire of studying robotics engineering. If you are interested in this field, consider taking the plunge and become an expert in this field.

The rise of robotics is due to the many functions performed by robots with applications in different fields, from industrial machinery in manufacturing processes to medicine. In short, it is a branch involved in the latest technological advances, working on issues related to electronics, computing and digitalization.

That is why today we are going to tell you about the requirements for these studies and where you can start studying robotics engineering.

Admission requirements for the degree

  • Baccalaureate and entrance exams (Selectividad): although it is possible to access this degree from any type of baccalaureate, it is recommended to have studied science in order to acquire certain knowledge during the course that will be required in the degree. Even so, it is possible to improve the admission grade for this degree by taking the voluntary phase of the PAU.
  • Vocational Training: the majority of Vocational Training degrees will be useful for this degree, and can be accessed from any professional family. Even so, remember that you can improve your admission mark for these studies by taking the voluntary phase of the PAU.
  • Students from foreign education systems: if you are a foreign student, you must previously apply for the homologation of your original qualification to the Spanish baccalaureate qualification. You will be able to take a maximum of 6 subjects of those offered in the UNED’s Specific Competences Tests (PCE) (at least one common core subject).

Cut-off marks

Until last year, the cut-off mark for these university studies was between 9 and 10, however, due to the increase in demand, it is now required from an 11. It is a demanding degree, so you should know that during your previous studies you should study and make the most of it to obtain the highest grade possible.

Specialisations

If you want to study robotics engineering, there are different fields or specialisations, such as those listed below:

  • Industrial robotics: machines that carry out repetitive tasks that complete specific actions in a factory and allow the manipulation or automation of production.
  • Nanotechnological robotics: miniature devices that solve problems mainly in the field of medicine.
  • Aerospace robotics: unmanned aerial vehicles.
  • Humanoid robotics: this speciality is dedicated to the manufacture of robots capable of simulating human activities.
  • Domotic robotics: automation of equipment inside the home.
  • Exploration robotics: configuration of programs that analyse files looking for patterns.

Desired profile

Normally, the profile that best fits for the technical career of Robotics or to study Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, as well as for its next application in the future, is the following:

  • Patient and dedicated person.
  • Passionate about technology and automation.
  • Concerned about the functioning of machines and mechanisms.
  • With a personal tendency towards the repair and construction of mechanisms.
  • Positive attitude towards technological progress.
  • Resolute, with a tendency to develop practical solutions to problems.
  • With a keen interest in professional tasks related to electronics, robotics and mechatronics.

Universities

  • University of Alicante: the University of Alicante offers the Degree in Electronic Engineering and Robotics, with a cut-off mark of 12.2.
  • University of Seville: the University of Seville offers the Degree in Electronic Engineering, Robotics and Mechatronics (taught by the University of Malaga and the University of Seville). This degree has a current cut-off mark of 12.5.
  • University of Castellón: the University Jaume I offers this degree in Castellón, with a cut-off mark of 11.1.

So now you know, if you meet these requirements and you think that studying robotics engineering is your passion, go for it.
