College dormitories near Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia

The National University of Distance Education (UNED) was born in 1972 in the central district of Madrid. Since then, it has been increasing its educational offering to offer official qualifications, postgraduate studies and a wide variety of complementary training modules in the most diverse areas of knowledge.

 Over time, the development of New Technologies has made possible a modernization of the teaching methodology and a more complete teaching, strengthening the objectives of university training to distance that the institution proposed from the first moment, also extending to other countries. 

 Today, UNED is a great institution: the largest university in Spain with almost 260,000 students; with an educational offer that covers 26 Bachelor's degrees, 43 master's degrees, more than 600 Continuing Training programs, 12 language courses, more than a hundred Summer Courses and almost 400 University Extension activities. More than 10,000 people, from the headquarters and from associated centers, strive to support students towards the goal of their training.  

 Although it is a distance university, UNED maintains several facilities in Madrid, on the Ciudad Universitaria campus and in Senda del Rey. To these central facilities it is necessary to add the network of associated centers and centers abroad, which number several dozen.

This material infrastructure, together with the thousands of teaching professionals who work at the institution, provides service to the entire student body of the university, the largest in number in the entire Spanish university system. As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that UNED was the first Spanish university to have a woman, Elisa Pérez Vera, as rector. The year was 1982.
